I thought I would write about a shoot we did this week. I’m lucky enough to takes some photos for Guide Dogs Victoria, and this week we had to photograph a litter of 7 puppies. Well you know what they say about working with children and animals! This litter had recently gone out to the homes of volunteer puppy raisers to begin their basic training towards becoming guide dogs, and were brought back in for the shoot. The puppy raisers and GDV staff worked very hard at calming down the boisterous puppies, who were obviously excited about seeing their siblings again. As you can see in the first couple of shots, they weren’t the slightest bit interested in having their photo taken – it was all about wrestling and running!

So how were we going to get a group shot of 7 puppies sitting still, all looking like angels, and staring at the camera? Modern technology of course! We decided to shoot them in small groups of 2 or 3, and pair them up with a brother or sister whom they weren’t interested in playing with, and try to get some shots. This took a bit of swapping around until we found the right combinations. Finally we had enough shots to be able to get each dog looking at their best. Back at home on the computer, I used photoshop to find the shots where they were looking at really cute, ‘cut’ out the dogs, and stitched the images together. The result is a nice line of adorable, well behaved puppies!

The lesson? There is always another way to solve a problem (dare I say, more than one way to skin a cat?). In addition, as one of the puppy raisers said to me: you have a really great job when you get to take photos of puppies all day!

And the final shot?
